Tax reform: change in tax payment deadlines

In 2023, the process of reforming the Italian tax system began. This reform touches on several aspects: from international taxation, to the sanctioning system, from  the deadlines of the declaration to the payment of taxes. Of particular interest for the topic covered in this article is Legislative Decree No. 1 of 2024.

In particular, Article 8 provides that taxes that must be paid in balance and on account in June may be paid in instalments. In the past, instalments were possible at the taxpayer’s option. Today, therefore, the installment plan no longer provides for the expression of the option by the taxpayer, but operates automatically.

When to pay taxes

As we know, taxes have to be paid every year. For each year we pay the balance of the previous year, and the deposit on the current year. So if I have to pay taxes for 2023, in 2024 I will pay the balance 2023 and the down payment 2024.

Under the new legislation, the June deadline will be automatically paid in instalments. The due date for each instalment is the 16th of each month. Therefore, the payment can be made in installments in a maximum of 6 installments, as the last possible deadline is December 16th.

When to declare income?

Another change introduced by Legislative Decree 1 2024 is the deadline for submitting the tax return. In the past, the deadline varied depending on the declaration form submitted. The 730 model had a deadline of 30 September, the individual model had a deadline of 30 November. From 2024, regardless of the model adopted, the deadline is a single one, i.e. 30 September.
